The Port Authority of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo (APDL) is a state-owned public limited company, aiming the management of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo ports, undertaking their economic exploitation, conservation and development, including the powers assigned to the port authority.
At the Port of Leixões cargo handling is almost all concessioned to private companies.
With 5 km of quays, 55 ha of embankments and 120 ha of wet area, the Port of Leixões is equipped with the most advanced management and security of port traffic systems. The safety of navigation and loading and unloading of ships are differentiating factors of services provided to ships and cargo, featuring a sea traffic control system (VTS – Vessel Traffic System) and a Coordination and Security Centre which fall within the Global Plan of port security.
The use of modern communication techniques, supported by a philosophy of E-Port Community Systems, is one of the critical factors of success for the development of port business and led to the design of the JUP – Port Single Window.
Services provided cover all aspects of shipping and it operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
